  • "Out beyond the ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.
    I will meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about ideas, language, and even the phrase, "each other" doesn't make any sense."

strictly speaking, the "exact quote" would be in another language, therefore subject to interpretation in translation.
      • totally, i have read three different 'interpretations' of this one.
        all equally lovely..

        v.nice
        xome
        • I'm open to 'different interpretations' if anyone has any to offer.........

"Beyond Islam and unbelief there is a 'desert plain.'
For us, there is a 'passion' in the midst of that expanse.
The knower [of God] who reaches there will prostrate [in prayer],
(For) there is neither Islam nor unbelief,
nor any 'where' (in) that place."

I am not a Persian speaker, so I offer this transliteration and translation with some caution. Hopefully it will challenge someone who knows better to correct my mistakes. But this is how I read Rumi's original:

Az kufr wa zi Islam birun sahr ayst
              Maw-raw be-miyan-awn faza suda-ayst
Aarif chun budan rasid sar-raw be-nihad
nah kufr nah Islam i nah anja ja-ayst

A very literal translation might be something like this:

From the covering up of truth (kufr) and from submission to God (Islam), without a desert there is
For us in the middle of that open place trade there is
The recognizer of God (Arif) as he arrived laid down his head
Neither covering up of truth nor Islam nor where that place there is

After attempting that transliteration, I found this on Ibrahim Gamard's site - which I've been recommending to everyone:

                az kufr-o ze-islâm berûn, SaHrâyê-st
                mâ-râ ba-meyân-é ân faZâ, sawdâyê-st
                `ârif chô ba-d-ân rasîd sar-râ be-neh-ad
                nay kufr-o na islâm, na ân-jâ jâyê-st

Well. that's what Rumi sounded like!

Fortunately for me it does not matter what Rumi sounds like. It only matters that the words i read attributed to him have lifted me up, have given wings to my heart and steadied a sometimes rocky walk through this life. To this I give my gratitude..... for the zikar of the heart

                  SUBAN ALLAH
                  AL HAMDU LILLAH
                  ALLAHO AKBAR!

                    >Fortunately for me it does not matter what Rumi sounds like.

Or what he really had to say? Pity... Because there is a lot there that someone who claims to have cultivated the 'zikar of the heart' could benefit from, that isn't present in Coleman Barks' souped-up versions.

So James, you know exactly what Rumi sounded like?

                      >I am not a Persian speaker, so I offer this transliteration and translation with some caution. Hopefully it will challenge someone who knows better to correct my mistakes. But this is how I read Rumi's original:<

There is a whole Universe between each word in Rumi's heart.... do not get too stuck in reading written scripture like it is all there is.

                    Thats so beautiful Joshua:
