"The Account of the Hare's trickery"

The hare delayed a little while in going and then he visited the sharp-clawed lion.

Because he left it very late in going, the lion was tearing up the earth and roaring.

He roared, 'I said the promise of those wretches would be in vain, in vain and weak and hopeless!

Their prattle threw me headlong from my donkey.
How long will I be fooled by circumstances?

The feeble prince is stuck when, like a fool, he does not look at what is all around him.

The road is level - under it are traps 0 there is a lack of meaning in the names.

The words and all the names resemble snares; the sweetened word's the sand of our life's water.

The one sand from which water gushes out is very seldom found - go seek it out!

The man of God is just that sand, my son, for he is one with God, devoid of selfhood.

Sweet waters of the faith gush out from him. For those who seek there's life and growth from him.

You know the man of God's not like the dust, which always drinks your living water dry.

So go in search of wisdom from the wise, and with them you become both seer and sage.

The wisdom seeker is the source of wisdom, for he is freed from gain and from resource.

The guarding stone becomes the guarded stone; his mind becomes contented by the spirit.

To start with his instructor was his mind, then later on his mind became his pupil.

Like Gabriel, the mind says, "o Mohammed, if I take one more step I shall be burned.

Leave me behind, press further on than this; this was my limit, sultan of the soul.
'

Ungrateful and impatient lazy people all know 'compulsion' has them by the foot.

Whoever gets compulsion will fall sick until that sickness puts them in the grave.

The prophet said that illness which is feigned brings sickness till you're snuffed out like a light.

So what is jabr? To bind up what is broken, to try to mend a vein that has been served.

But since your leg's not broken on this path, whom do you mock? Why wear a plaster cast?

He broke his leg upon exertion's path: Boraq arrived for him and he got.

Faith's bearer, he became the one borne up. He was commanded and became commander.

Till now he took his orders from the king: Henceforth he gives the orders to the tropps.

Till now the stars have made impressions onhim; henceforth he is the emperor of stars.

If difficulties now occlude your sight, then you will doubt 'the moon was split asunder.
'

Renew your faith but not by speech of tongues, O you would have renewed your lust in secret.

As long as lust is new, your faith is not; this lust's indeed a lock upon that door.

You have interpreted the virgin word - interpret your own self, not holy scripture!

You lustfully interpret the Quran; you lowered and distorted its high meaning.
