Rumi, My Favorite Ancient Sufi Mystic
This is one I have known by, and been sure to kept close to, my heart for years. Hope it moves you like it nevers ceases to me...

"Out beyond ideas of Wrongdoing and Rightdoing, there is a field.
I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, and even the phrase 'eachother' doesn't make any sense."
-Rumi, c. 532 A.D.

Any one else favor this one like I do?

  • Fifteen years ago I copied this from a library book in to a journal. When i read this post, i got the chills.... I think it is no coincidence considering all the current world events, debates, etc.. that you would be posting it. I imagined him, as he had recited his poetry while circling round and round, moving over the words slowly... dunno..

I too hold these verses close to my heart. I always think of them as part of a set, just as I found them in the collection translated by Coleman Barks:

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
and frightened. Don't open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
    doesn't make any sense.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
    Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
    Don't go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
    where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
    Don't go back to sleep.

I would love to kiss you.
The price of kissing is your life.

Now my loving is running to my life shouting,
What a bargain, let's buy it.

Daylight, full of small dancing particles
and the one great turning, our souls
are dancing with you, without feet, they dance.
Can you see them when I whisper in your ear?

They try to say what you are, spiritual or sexual?
They wonder about Solomon and all his wives.

In the body of the world, they say, there is a soul
    and you are that.

But we have ways within each other
that will never be said by anyone.
Come to the orchard in Spring.
There is light and wine, and sweethearts in the pomegranate flowers.

If you do not come, these do not matter.
If you do come, these do not matter.

Thank you Darkling. I posted last week looking for this poem I had lost about thresholds (actually as it turns out, doorsills). It is wonderful to have the whole set of verses... The piece that had been so important to me was:

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
      Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
      Don't go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
      where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
      Don't go back to sleep.

Sage, this has been my favorite poem quote of his for years! Thanks for bringing it out again!!!
        • One of My favourites for years as welll!...I found this poem after an 'un-fun' break-up...to say it was very helpful is an understement "Beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing...there is a field...I will meet you there"...this "idea"...became mantra (of forgiveness and understanding) for me! I even used these lines in a song!
          Yeah Rumi!
Yeah Sage! Yeah Rumi Tribe! Yeah MT...for moderating!
It Is a Joy to..."Be with those who Uplift you!."..Us!
          • As usual...

...Rumi touches a deep part of soul self...Longing for healing, forgiveness, non-judgement in my interactions...

Thank you for laying it out with the rest of it's body...it feels good to feel the whole piece to get a sense of where Rumi was standing/sitting/kneeling when the inspiration took him....

I have always loved that quote...It has followed me in the wind, whispering itself to me at times in my life...

Thank you for the continued inspiration I find reading the posts in this tribe!

            Blessings...
